The following websites and downloadable resources were assembled by the Children’s Bureau of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help families support their lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth, understand what to expect, and learn how to talk about a number of issues that may be impacting their youth.

AFFIRM Caregiver: Affirmative Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Caregivers of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Questioning (LGBTQ+) Populations – This factsheet provides an overview of AFFIRM Caregiver, an intervention designed to enhance affirmative parenting practices that promote the safety and well-being of LGBTQ+ youth. 

Youth AFFIRM: Affirmative Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Questioning (LGBTQ+) Populations – This factsheet provides an overview of AFFIRM Youth, a coping-skills training intervention focused on reducing mental health issues and behavioral risks experienced by LGBTQ+ populations. 

Chosen Affirming Family Finding – This factsheet describes Chosen Affirming Family Finding, an intervention for working with young people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, or other diverse identity and involved with the child welfare system to expand their family network, including chosen family. 

Cuyahoga County’s System Transformation for Serving LGBTQ+ Youth in Foster Care – This infographic depicts the steps in a systems change process in Cuyahoga County (OH) to provide more effective services for youth who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, or other diverse identity and their families. 

Journey Ahead – This factsheet describes Journey Ahead, an intervention for young people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, or other diverse identity (LGBTQ+) that seeks to build a positive sense of self, build community with other LGBTQ+ people, learn transition skills, and develop coping skills and stress reduction strategies. 

Rollout of Data Collection on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity – This infographic describes a pilot initiative to collect sexual orientation and gender identity data from youth in the care of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.   

Collecting SOGIE Data – This tip sheet outlines how to collect data on sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression, including gaining buy-in, cleaning and sharing data, and training.  

Working Virtually With Families of LGBTQ+ Youth – This tip sheet provides information about working virtually with families of youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, or other diverse identity, including ideas for initial engagement and rapport building. 

Working With Families of LGBTQ+ Youth – This tip sheet provides information about working with families of youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, or other diverse identity, including ideas for preparing agency staff and tips for connecting with families. 

LGBTQ+ Youth Engagement Virtually and In-Person – This tip sheet provides information about engaging youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, or other diverse identity in both virtual and in-person settings. 

Youth Acceptance Project – This factsheet describes the Youth Acceptance Project, a clinical model for working with the families of youth who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, or other diverse identity to help address caregivers’ emotions related to their child’s sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression.
