When a child is struggling in school, the first step to finding help is figuring out what’s getting in his way. As a starting point, you need an evaluation of your child’s learning profile, to identify strengths and weaknesses, and suggest what kind of support he might need to thrive. But, the process of getting a child evaluated can be daunting. How do these evaluations work? Who does them, and who does them best? What kind of information can you get from them? How should parents, schools and specialists use the evaluation to make the most of the findings? How do the results inform the services a child is provided–or school placement?
Matthew Cruger, PhD and Senior Director, Learning and Development Center at Child Mind Institute discusses the types and purpose of evaluations, the evaluation process, and federal and state laws with respect to student eligibility and school services.
